Preventing cavities with cocoa, coffee, tea: Natural supplements for dental health

Polyphenols occurring in cocoa, coffee and tea can have a role in the prevention of cariogenic (cavity forming) processes, due to their antibacterial action. Cocoa polyphenol pentamers significantly reduce biofilm formation and acid production by Streptococcus mutans and S. sanguinis. In the same way, trigonelline, caffeine and chlorogenic acid occurring in green and roasted coffee interfere with S. mutans adsorption to saliva-coated hydroxyapatite beads.

Studies carried out on green, oolong and black tea indicate that tea polyphenols exert an anti-caries effect via an anti-microbial mode-of-action, and galloyl esters of (-)-epicatechin, (-)-epigallocatechin and (-)-gallocatechin show increasing antibacterial activities. The anti-cariogenic effects against alpha-haemolytic streptococci showed by polyphenols from cocoa, coffee, and tea suggest further studies to a possible application of these beverages in the prevention of pathogenesis of dental caries.

High fructose consumption and metabolic syndrome, hypertension

A new study in the American Journal of Nephrology concludes that a high fructose diet can induce metabolic syndrome even in the setting of caloric restriction. Captopril and allopurinol synergistically reduce features of the metabolic syndrome, especially hypertension, insulin resistance and dyslipidemia. Combination allopurinol and ACE inhibitor therapy might provide a superior means to prevent diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

A diet high in fructose, a form of sugar found in sweetened soft drinks, fruit juice and junk food, raises blood pressure in men.

Two recent studies provided the first evidence that fructose helps raise blood pressure. One study further suggested that people who consume junk foods and sweetened soft drinks at night could gain weight faster than those who don't.

Fructose accounts for about half the sugar molecules in table sugar and in high-fructose corn syrup, the sweetener used in many packaged foods.

One of two studies released recently provided the first evidence that fructose helps raise blood pressure. It also found that the drug allopurinol, used to treat gout, can alleviate the effect by reducing uric acid levels in the body.

The second study, which measured fructose intake in mice, suggested that people who consume junk foods and sweetened soft drinks at night could gain weight faster than those who don't.

"These results suggest that excessive fructose intake may have a role in the worldwide epidemic of obesity and diabetes," said Dr. Richard Johnson of the University of Colorado-Denver, who studied the link between blood pressure and men.

The findings provide the latest evidence of ties between sugar-rich diets and health problems that have prompted some experts to call for a tax on sugary soft drinks.

Fructose accounts for about half the sugar molecules in table sugar and in high-fructose corn syrup, the sweetener used in many packaged foods.

Johnson and colleagues at the Mateo Orfila Hospital in Spain studied 74 men given 200 grams of fructose per day on top of their regular diet. That amount is well above a daily intake of 50 grams to 70 grams of fructose consumed by most American adults.

Half the men were also given allopurinol.

After two weeks, the men who received only the fructose registered increases of six millimeters in systolic blood pressure -- the top reading -- and about three millimeters in diastolic or the bottom reading, the researchers told an American Heart Association meeting in Chicago.

Most of their blood pressure readings returned to normal levels after two months.

The men who did not get allopurinol also were twice as likely to develop metabolic syndrome, measured by risk factors such as too much abdominal fat, high blood pressure and poor cholesterol readings.

By contrast, those given allopurinol and fructose had significantly lower uric acid levels, and virtually no increase in systolic blood pressure or higher risk of metabolic syndrome.

For the second study, researchers in Ohio studied mice given fructose water to drink. Some had unrestricted access, while others received it during the day or at night.

"The first thing we noticed was that the mice on restricted access rushed to their drinking bottles to load up on the sweetened beverage, similar to teenagers who drink too many soft drinks."

The American Heart Association says women should eat no more than 100 calories of added processed sugar per day, or six teaspoons (25 grams), while most men should keep it to just 150 calories or nine teaspoons (37.5 grams). On average Americans consume 22 teaspoons (90 grams) or 355 calories of added sugar each day.

Vitamin D (D3) supplements to prevent breast and colon cancer?

In a recent study, researchers at the UCSD School of Medicine and Moores Cancer Center used a complex computer prediction model to determine that intake of vitamin D3 and calcium would prevent 58,000 new cases of breast cancer and 49,000 new cases of colorectal cancer annually in the US and Canada. The researchers' model also predicted that 75% of deaths from these cancers could be prevented with adequate intake of vitamin D3 and calcium.

If you choose to use an oral vitamin D supplement be aware that there are 2 types – one is natural and one is synthetic.

The natural one is D3 (cholecalciferol), which is the same vitamin D your body makes when exposed to sunshine

The synthetic one is vitamin D2, sometimes called ergocalciferol

Once either form of the vitamin is in your body, it must be converted to a more active form. Vitamin D3 is converted 500 percent faster than vitamin D2, and is therefore a better alternative.

Vitamin D2 also has a shorter shelf life, and its metabolites bind with protein poorly, making it less effective. Studies have even concluded that vitamin D2 should no longer be regarded as a nutrient appropriate for supplementation or fortification of foods (although it continues to be used). So if you choose to use vitamin D supplements make sure it is in the form of vitamin D3.

Nearly all prescription-based supplements contain synthetic vitamin D2, so if you get a prescription for vitamin D from your doctor, you’re most likely receiving the inferior vitamin D2.

Annual flu shot raises risk of H1N1 Swine flu? Try Vitamin D supplements

A scientific study is raising questions about whether getting a seasonal flu shot raises the risk of contracting the H1N1 virus, but the evidence is unconfirmed at this point.

"It appears to be that for people who got seasonal influenza vaccine last year, they were at greater risk of getting H1N1 disease this year," Dr. Donald Low, an infectious diseases expert at Toronto's Mount Sinai Hospital, told reporters.

The study is based on research in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec. Health organizations around the world are watching the results carefully, including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.

"It is difficult to speak about a study that has yet to be published, however, as this is an important issue involving the subject of seasonal influenza and the fast-moving global pandemic of 2009 H1N1 influenza it is important to note the scientists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have not seen this effect in systems we have reviewed in the United States," spokesman Joe Quimby said in an email.

The study is still being peer reviewed in a medical journal, and it's not clear when it will be published.

It could change how health officials in Canada and around the world plan their responses to a potential swine flu outbreak.

After studying the role of vitamin D in severe seasonal influenza, Canada’s Public Health Agency (PHAC) has confirmed that it will now adapt their research to investigate the role of vitamin D in protection against swine flu.

One credible hypothesis that explains the seasonal nature of flu is that influenza is a vitamin D deficiency disease.

Vitamin D levels in your blood fall to their lowest point during flu seasons. Unable to be protected by the body’s own antibiotics (antimicrobial peptides) that are released by vitamin D, a person with a low vitamin D level is more vulnerable to contracting colds, influenza, and other respiratory infections.

Studies show that children with rickets, a vitamin D-deficient skeletal disorder, suffer from frequent respiratory infections, and children exposed to sunlight are less likely to get a cold. The increased number of deaths that occur in winter, largely from pneumonia and cardiovascular diseases, are most likely due to vitamin D deficiency.

At least five studies show an inverse association between lower respiratory tract infections and vitamin D levels. That is, the higher your vitamin D level, the lower your risk of contracting colds, flu, and other respiratory tract infections:

Vitamin D has positive effects not just on influenza, but also on:

* Heart Disease
* Cancer
* Diabetes
* Inflammatory Bowel Disease
* Rheumatoid Arthritis
* Multiple Sclerosis
* Osteoporosis

... and many other illnesses as well.

Vitamin D makes you smarter and improves balance

A recent study would suggest that vitamin D can make you smarter. Dr. David Lee from the University of Manchester just published a study in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry. Researchers studied cognitive performance in more than 3,000 European men between ages 40 and 79 and found that those with lower vitamin D levels did more poorly on tasks designed to test "mental agility." The researchers said they were not sure how mental agility and vitamin D were related, but there were suggestions that vitamin D may increase certain hormonal activity or help protect brain cells.

A recent Johns Hopkins study published in the May 25, 2009 Archives of Internal Medicine indicated a third of American adults, 69 million men and women over age 40, are up to 12 times more likely to have a serious fall because they have some form of inner-ear dysfunction that throws them off balance and makes them dizzy, according to Johns Hopkins experts. Even more disturbing is the fact that a third of this group, or more than 22 million, were unaware of their vulnerability, having had no previous incidents of disequilibrium or sudden falls to suggest that anything was wrong. These asymptomatic people were three times more likely to suffer a potentially fatal fall than people with a healthy sense of balance, whereas people already experiencing symptoms of imbalance had a 12-fold increase in risk. Accidental falls are among the leading causes of death in the elderly, killing an estimated 13,000 seniors each year in the U.S. and resulting in more than one and a half million visits to hospital emergency rooms, experts say. Vitamin D has been shown in previous studies to help support healthy balance. Its mechanism of action is uncertain but may be related to improving muscle strength.

Vitamin D is essential for good cardiovascular, bone, immune, neurological and balance health. Most Americans have far lower levels than optimal. To achieve optimal levels experts recommend 2,000 to 4,000 IU of vitamin D3 per day. The medical science is clear the RDA of 400 IU per day is far too low, and D3 appears to be safe up to 10,000 IU per day.

Vitamin D supplements are very inexpensive and are available online at GNC, Drugstore.com, Vitamin World and Amazon's Nature Made Store (links to the right of this page)...

Vitamin B12 and Folic Acid important to prevent birth defects

A new research report states that prior to becoming pregnant, women need to get enough vitamin B12 in addition to folic acid to cut their risk of having a baby with a serious birth defect of the brain and spinal cord.

Irish women with the lowest vitamin B12 levels were 5 times more likely to have a baby with a neural tube defect than those with the highest levels, the researchers wrote in the journal Pediatrics.

Neural tube defects can lead to lifelong disability or death. The two most common ones are spina bifida, in which the spinal cord and back bones do not form properly, and anencephaly, a fatal condition in which the brain and skull bones do not develop normally.

Dr. James Mills of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, one of the researchers, said the study showed that vitamin B12 deficiency was a risk factor for neural tube defects independent of folic acid, another B vitamin.

Many women now are aware of the importance of folic acid and there has been a drop in neural tube defects.

Dr. Mills said he hopes that awareness of the similar role of vitamin B12 can reduce neural tube defects further.

Vitamin B12 is essential to maintain healthy nerve cells and red blood cells. It is found in meat, dairy products, eggs, fish, shellfish and fortified breakfast cereals. It also can be taken as an individual supplement or in a multivitamin.

Resveratrol health benefits - natural supplement sources

17 years ago, 60 Minutes first examined the so-called French paradox, which suggested that the French - despite a high fat diet and high consumption of wine - had a remarkably low incidence of heart disease, compared with Americans. Most researchers agreed that there was something in the wine that offered protection, and a few years later, even the highly cautious federal dietary guidelines say that moderate consumption of red wine can be beneficial.

Now, scientists across the country have identified a substance in red wine called resveratrol that they believe might do more than just protect the heart, but could - in very high concentrations - significantly extend life by preventing a number of age related illnesses. If they're right, we all may soon be taking a pill that could give us an extra decade or two of healthy old age.

"If the promise holds true, I think this has the chance to change healthcare," Dr. Christoph Westphal tells correspondent Morley Safer.

Dr. Westphal says we all may soon be taking a drug that just might beat the clock, a simple pill that could delay the inevitable. "Our goal is to prevent and forestall many of the diseases that strike us as we reach 50, 60, and 70. All with one pill."

Vitamin C may lower blood pressure: Natural hypertension treatment

A new study in young adult women links high blood levels of vitamin C with lower blood pressure.

This "strongly suggests that vitamin C is specifically important in maintaining a healthy blood pressure," says lead author Dr. Gladys Block, of the University of California, Berkeley.

Previous research linked high blood levels of vitamin C with lower blood pressure among middle-age and older adults, typically those with higher than optimal blood pressure readings, Block and colleagues report in the Nutrition Journal.

The current study involved 242 black and white women between 18 and 21 years old, with normal blood pressures, who were participants in the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Growth and Health Study. The girls had entered the trial when they were 8 to 11 years old. Over a 10-year period, their plasma levels of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and blood pressure were monitored.

At year 10, Block and her colleagues found that blood pressure, both the systolic and diastolic (top and bottom reading), was inversely associated with ascorbic acid levels.

Specifically, women with the highest levels of ascorbic acid had a decline of about 4.66 mm Hg in systolic and 6.04 mm Hg in diastolic blood pressure compared with women with the lowest ascorbic acid levels. This difference still held true after researchers allowed for differences in body mass, race, education levels, and dietary fat and sodium intake.

Women with the lowest levels of plasma ascorbic acid likely consumed average amounts of fruits, vegetables, and fortified foods while those with the highest plasma ascorbic acid levels likely ate diets rich in fruits and vegetables or took multivitamins or vitamin C supplements, the researchers note.

Further analyses of vitamin C and blood pressure changes over the previous year, "also strongly suggested that the people with the highest blood level of vitamin C had the least increase in blood pressure," Block said.

Other supplements associated with reductions in blood pressure include Vitamin D, olive leaf and grape seed extract...

Drinking coffee may help lower risk of oral cancer

Drinking coffee may help lower the risk of developing oral cancer, according to new Japanese research.

Dr. Toru Naganuma, of Tohoku University in Sendai, and his team analyzed data to determine whether drinking coffee could have a protective impact against cancer of the mouth, pharynx and esophagus.

"Although cessation of alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking is currently the best known way to help reduce the risk of developing these cancers, coffee could be a preventive factor in both low-risk and high-risk populations," Naganuma said.

The study included information about the diet - including coffee consumption - of more than 38,000 people 40 to 64 years old with no prior history of cancer.

Nearly 160 cases of cancer of the mouth, pharynx and esophagus occurred during 13 years of the follow-up period.

In a report published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the researchers said that compared with people who did not drink coffee, those who drank one or more cups per day had half the risk of developing these cancers.

They said the reduction in risk included people who are at high risk for these cancers - study participants who were drinkers and/or smokers at the start of the study.

Grape seed extract kills cancer cells, new study shows

An extract from grape seeds can destroy cancer cells, new US research suggests.

In lab experiments, scientists found that the extract stimulated leukemia cells to commit suicide.

Within 24 hours, 76% of leukemia cells exposed to the extract were killed off, while healthy cells were unharmed, Clinical Cancer Research reports.

What researchers seek is an agent that has an effect on cancer cells but leaves normal cells alone, and this shows that grapeseed extract fits into this category

Grape seeds contain a number of antioxidants, including resveratrol, which is known to have anti-cancer properties, as well as positive effect on the heart.

Previous research has shown grapeseed extract has an effect on skin, breast, bowel, lung, stomach and prostate cancer cells in the laboratory.

It can also reduce the size of breast tumours in rats and skin tumours in mice.

However, the University of Kentucky study is the first to test its impact on a blood cancer.

Lead researcher Professor Xianglin Shi said: "These results could have implications for the incorporation of agents such as grapeseed extract into prevention or treatment of haematological (blood) malignancies and possibly other cancers.

The researchers exposed leukemia cells to grape extract in a range of different doses.

One of the higher doses produced a marked effect, causing large numbers of the cells to commit suicide in a process known as apoptosis.

This is a natural method of getting rid of damaged and potentially dangerous cells.

The researchers found grapeseed extract activates a protein called JNK which helps to regulate apoptosis.
